✦ Silver Jewelry Care
Share
SEQUIN jewelry is crafted from 92.5% pure silver. By wearing it frequently and keeping it dry, you can enhance the radiance of your silver jewelry over time.
92.5% pure silver offers a degree of oxidation resistance, but prolonged exposure to air and moisture may cause oxidation, resulting in tarnishing and a loss of luster. To maintain the brightness and shine of your jewelry, regular care and maintenance are essential!
Below are some tips for daily maintenance and care :)
1. Wear Frequently
The natural oils from your skin act as a protective layer for silver jewelry, so we recommend frequent wear to slow the oxidation process. After daily wear, rinse with clean water, dry thoroughly, and store in the airtight zip-lock bag provided by SEQUIN to prevent exposure to air and moisture.
2. Keep Dry and Avoid Humidity
Silver jewelry should be kept as dry as possible and not exposed to humid environments for extended periods. While silver can be rinsed with clean water, it is best not to wear it while bathing, as prolonged exposure can lead to surface roughness or yellowing. Please also remove your silver jewelry before entering hot springs, as the sulfur in hot springs can cause rapid tarnishing.
3. Avoid Contact with Chemicals
Everyday products such as perfumes, cosmetics, and detergents contain chemicals that can corrode or discolor silver jewelry. Acidic liquids, like rainwater and seawater, can also speed up the oxidation process. We recommend removing your jewelry before contact, and if it does come into contact, quickly dry it to restore its original condition.
4. Avoid Wearing During Exercise or Household Chores
Sweat from exercise can accelerate silver oxidation, while chlorine in swimming pools can corrode silver, so it’s best to avoid wearing silver jewelry during sports or swimming. Household chores or heavy work can leave scratches on the jewelry surface and expose it to chemicals like cleaners and bleach, which can hasten oxidation.
5. Store Separately in Sealed Containers
Since pure silver is relatively soft, it should be stored separately to avoid scratches or damage to any gold-plated layers. Avoid stacking with harder materials, or wear with materials of similar hardness to reduce friction. When not in use, store your jewelry in a dry place away from direct sunlight, such as a zip-lock bag, pouch, or jewelry box, and ideally keep items separated to slow the oxidation process.
Even with proper care, silver jewelry will naturally darken and oxidize over time with long-term use.
Don't worry! Here are three cleaning methods to restore your jewelry’s shine!
✦ For Regular, Mild Oxidation: Silver Polishing Cloth & Eraser
- Polished Silver / Polishing Cloth: If there is slight oxidation or dirt on the silver surface, gently polish with a silver polishing cloth to remove the oxidized layer and dirt. Silver polishing cloths are reusable but should not be washed; replace them when they lose effectiveness.
- Matte Silver / Eraser: For matte silver that has darkened, use an eraser to rub the tarnished areas; the friction will remove the oxidation. This method works particularly well. For narrow areas, like the inside of a ring, cut the eraser into small pieces for easier use. Avoid using overly hard erasers to prevent scratching.
✦ Cleaning and Protection: Silver Polishing Cream
Silver polishing cream, available in paste or gel form, has both cleaning and protective functions. Similar to the polishing cloth, it contains more cleaning agents that add a protective layer, slowing re-oxidation. Use as directed on the product to restore shine to your silver.
