✦ Real Leather Care

SEQUIN selects full-grain leather to create each bag, preserving the natural texture of the leather and combining it with skilled craftsmanship, making every piece unique.
Here are some essential tips to help you care for your genuine leather bag!
1. Avoid Water and Maintain Regular Cleaning
Genuine leather is sensitive to water. Try to avoid getting it wet, such as in the rain or through any direct liquid contact. If it does get wet, gently pat it dry, let it air dry, and then proceed with cleaning and maintenance to prevent water stains. For daily cleaning, gently wipe the surface dust off with a soft cloth or use a leather cleaner, wiping lightly along the leather’s grain to remove dirt and grime. Avoid cleaners with alcohol or oily ingredients to prevent damage.
2. Avoid Direct Sunlight and High-Temperature, Humid Environments
While regular use enhances the leather’s natural shine, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can lead to discoloration, cracking, or even hardening. Similarly, keep your bag out of hot, unventilated areas, such as inside a car trunk, as this may cause the edge coating to melt or fade.
3. Keep Away from Chemical Solvents
If you've recently applied hand cream or sunscreen, avoid touching the bag’s handles or hardware as oils and sweat can accumulate and potentially cause corrosion or tarnish on the hardware, leading to black spots or oxidation.
4. Avoid Wearing Light-Colored Bags with Dark Clothing
Dark-colored or easily dyeable clothing, such as jeans, can transfer color to lighter bags through friction, which is difficult to clean.
5. Store in a Dehumidified, Non-Crushed Environment
Since genuine leather has pores, it “breathes.” After cleaning and maintaining it, stuff the bag with unprinted white paper to keep its shape and absorb moisture. Store it in a SEQUIN dust bag in a storage area with around 50% relative humidity to keep the leather dry but not too dry. If a dehumidifier isn’t available, a dehumidifier can be used to prevent excess humidity. Avoid stacking bags and keep them lying flat. Take them out periodically to apply oil and let them air naturally, which will extend their lifespan.
Just like caring for our skin, regular maintenance for leather is crucial. Every 3-6 months, deeply condition the leather by applying leather oil. Choose transparent leather oils with simple ingredients, such as mink oil or neatsfoot oil, for a thorough conditioning.
✦ Dirt Cleaning & Maintenance: If the leather shows signs of mildew, gently wipe it with a cloth dampened with warm water and dry with a hairdryer on a low setting. After air-drying, apply maintenance oil with a soft white cloth to prevent further mildew growth.
For stains, you can use a neutral cleaner following these steps:
- Dilute the cleaner with water, apply a damp cloth or wet wipe, wring out excess water, and gently wipe the stain until it’s removed.
- Dampen a soft cloth with an appropriate leather cleaner; avoid applying the cleaner directly to the leather. Test a small, inconspicuous area first for colorfastness.
- Gently wipe in a single circular direction to prevent streaks. Afterward, dry with a clean cloth and let air-dry for about an hour.
✦ Oil Stain Cleaning: For oil stains, quickly absorb the oil with a microfiber cloth, then sprinkle natural talcum powder on the area and leave it for a few hours. Brush away the powder and repeat if needed. Avoid rubbing or washing the stain to preserve the leather’s texture.
Following these care tips not only keeps your leather bag in excellent condition but also extends its lifespan.
